Calling Out the Douchebags: an Example of Cyberbullying

George Takei, best known for his Star Trek role as Hikaru Sulu, is also a fierce advocate for gay rights. Takei recently spoke out against “douchebag” Clint McCance, a former school board member in Arkansas. McCance posted hateful comments on his Facebook profile, encouraging gays to kill themselves. McCance’s words are a horrible – but very real – example of cyberbullying.

In Takei’s video, he addresses McCance directly, saying “Mr. McCance, YOU are a douchebag. That’s right, a douchebag.” Takei’s message is both blunt and funny – but the issues being addressed aren’t. This video is one of many that promote the It Gets Better project. It Gets Better is a safe online haven for people to post videos or share messages of support for the LGBT community.

While the Internet is an easy way for cyberbullies to target victims, including gay teens, It Gets Better provides a positive online environment to fight bullying. Cyberbullying is a growing danger but It Gets Better – and Takei’s funny and effective message – is a great example of how people can take a stand online.

Do you know anyone who has experienced extremely hurtful cyberbullying? How has someone you know dealt with this?
